 How a Petrol Engine Works  Step by Step Guide for Beginners


The petrol engine is one of the most common engines in cars today. It powers most small and medium-sized cars. But have you ever wondered how it actually works?

In this post, we will explain how a petrol engine works in easy steps using a simple 4-stroke process.


What is a Petrol Engine?

A petrol engine uses petrol (gasoline) and air to create a small explosion that pushes the car forward. This explosion happens inside the engine, so it's called an internal combustion engine.


The 4-Stroke Cycle of a Petrol Engine

A typical petrol engine works in 4 main steps. These are called strokes:





1. Intake Stroke

  • The engine opens a valve.

  • A mix of air and petrol goes into the cylinder.

  • The piston moves down, pulling in the fuel-air mixture.

 Think of it like breathing in.



2. Compression Stroke

  • The valve closes.

  • The piston moves up, compressing the fuel-air mix.

 This makes the mix ready for a powerful explosion.



3. Power Stroke

  • The spark plug makes a tiny spark.

  • The fuel-air mix explodes.

  • The explosion pushes the piston down hard.

 This is where the engine gets its power!



4. Exhaust Stroke

  • The piston moves up again.

  • The burned gases go out through the exhaust valve.

 The waste gas leaves the engine through the exhaust pipe.



 And then the cycle repeats — very fast!

A petrol engine can do this cycle thousands of times per minute that's what makes the car move!


Even though a petrol engine may seem complicated, it all comes down to this 4-step cycle:

Intake → Compression → Power → Exhaust

It’s like the engine is breathing, squeezing, exploding, and exhaling—over and over again!
