What is a Petrol Engine?
A petrol engine uses petrol (gasoline) and air to create a small explosion that pushes the car forward. This explosion happens inside the engine, so it's called an internal combustion engine.
The 4-Stroke Cycle of a Petrol Engine
A typical petrol engine works in 4 main steps. These are called strokes:
1. Intake Stroke

The engine opens a valve.

A mix of air and petrol goes into the cylinder.

The piston moves down, pulling in the fuel-air mixture.
Think of it like breathing in.
2. Compression Stroke

The valve closes.

The piston moves up, compressing the fuel-air mix.
This makes the mix ready for a powerful explosion.
3. Power Stroke

The spark plug makes a tiny spark.

The fuel-air mix explodes.

The explosion pushes the piston down hard.
This is where the engine gets its power!
4. Exhaust Stroke

The piston moves up again.

The burned gases go out through the exhaust valve.
The waste gas leaves the engine through the exhaust pipe.
And then the cycle repeats — very fast!
A petrol engine can do this cycle thousands of times per minute that's what makes the car move!
Even though a petrol engine may seem complicated, it all comes down to this 4-step cycle:
Intake → Compression → Power → Exhaust
